Consultation Overview
This is a revised practice guideline replacing the singular legacy Colleges Medication Guidelines. We requested feedback from nurses and other stakeholders to ensure we developed a relevant and useful practice guideline that will support nurses to provide safe, competent, compassionate and ethical nursing services.
Consultation Participation and Response
We requested feedback using an online survey and received responses from 8 stakeholders with 2 respondents having suggestions for additional content and 2 respondents having suggestions on the roll out of the practice support tool.
Impact on the Project
Thank you for providing your feedback on the Medication Guideline for Nurses. Below explains how we incorporated this feedback into the guideline.
There was a request to add a statement related to documenting the application of medicated creams and ointments to unregulated care providers (UCP). We added a statement to page 18 to clarify the role of the nurse and the UCP related to documentation.
There was a request to further explain prescribing vs. supplying for community nursing. RNs and LPNs do not prescribe so this suggestion was not clear to us. There are several examples of the difference between supplying and dispensing on page 5. We felt these examples are sufficient at this time.
Next Steps/Conclusion
There will be a planned roll out of this practice support tool in the future. We have that plan on hold as we support the public, nurses and others during the COVID-19 pandemic. To see more of this work, visit our COVID-19 webpage.
We encourage stakeholder to watch for the Medication Guideline for Nurses roll out in the future.
