After many meaningful and rewarding years with NSCN, CEO & Registrar, Sue Smith, will be turning the page to begin a new chapter as she nears her retirement. As we prepare for this transition, we are taking a moment to reflect, with immense appreciation, on Sue’s remarkable journey as CEO & Registrar, from the challenges overcome, to the milestones achieved, and everything in between.
As she looks ahead to this exciting next phase, Sue took some time to reflect on her career and share her thoughts on her time at NSCN:
- What originally inspired you to take the role as CEO & Registrar at NSCN?
With many years of progressive senior leadership experience behind me, the opportunity to step into this role felt like a natural next step – and the timing was just right with the open opportunity. I knew that I could make a meaningful, positive difference, and that belief inspired me to take on the role.
- What are you most proud of accomplishing during your time as CEO & Registrar?
There is so much that we’ve accomplished together at NSCN to make a positive impact for those we serve, the public of Nova Scotia. One standout was becoming the second regulator in Canada to unify all nurse designations under one nursing regulator – a milestone that took three and half years of dedicated collaboration with every partner and stakeholder. That effort culminated in the creation of NSCN on June 4, 2019, a true testament to what we can achieve together!
- Do you have a favorite quote, mantra or piece of advice that guided you through your career and/or time at NSCN?
The mantra that has consistently guided me is: “speak to the listening”. It’s a powerful reminder to communicate with empathy, intention and awareness of others’ perspectives.
- What will you miss the most about NSCN?
Without a doubt, I will miss the people the most. From our incredible staff and Board to the public, registrants, national colleagues, and our many partners and stakeholders – you’ve all made this journey unforgettable. It has been an absolute privilege to work alongside each and every one of you.
- What are you looking forward to most in your retirement - any new personal goals or passions you are looking forward to?
I am really looking forward to spending more quality time with my family, especially my twin 9-year-old granddaughters. I am also eager to get back out on the golf course more often. Fore!
As Sue prepares to step away from her role, the NSCN staff and Board extend our deepest gratitude for her leadership, dedication, and the many contributions she has made to NSCN. It has been an honour to have her as CEO & Registrar for the past 6 years at NSCN, as well as the 4 and half years at the legacy college, the College of Registered Nurses of Nova Scotia, prior to becoming one nursing regulator.
Sue leaves behind a strong legacy and a committed team ready to continue advancing our mandate of public protection and our vision to be a leader in regulatory excellence. We thank her for her remarkable service—her impact will be felt for years to come.
Thank you, Sue.
